Objectives

The LIFE NEREiDE project (LIFE15 ENV/IT/000268) wants to demonstrate the use of new porous asphalt pavements and low noise surfaces composed by recycled asphalt pavements and crumb rubber from scrap tires. These materials will be mixed with binders at warm temperatures to produce warm mixture asphalt pavements with specific benefits.

Actions

The NEREiDE project aims to demonstrate the use of new porous asphalt pavements and low noise surfaces constructed by using RAP, crumb rubber from scrap tires and warm mix technologies, as a valuable solution for reducing the road traffic noise, for increasing the use of reclaimed materials in new (and rehabilitated) pavements, for reducing carbon emissions during paving operations and, at the same time, for improving road safety.

Expected results

The project will allow to reduce the urban noise pollution in the selected sites by at least 5 dB (A), compared to traditional pavements, and 2 dB (A) compared to the other traditional porous asphalt pavements. The safety of road surfaces will be tested and an increase of 20% in road friction is expected; will also be carried out an evaluation of air pollution sustainability in the laying of these special surfaces.
